Red over Black Landscape Mug

Price

$96.00

This mug began as a response to the Chinle or Navajo layer of sandstone that surrounds me here in southern Utah. It didn’t come from staring at rocks and then trying to replicate them in clay. That’s not how landscape influences my work. It’s more intuitive, less about imitation and more about resonance. The land here holds memory, sediment, time… and that becomes the starting point of a conversation.

In the studio, that conversation turns into form. It becomes texture, weight, and color. The mug holds those things quietly. You may not see the sandstone, but you might feel it. Not in a literal way, but in the way your hand wraps around the 15oz form, unexpectedly ergonomic, shaped to be held. You might sense the repetition of geologic time in the rhythm of the glaze or the curve of the handle.

It's a vessel, yes, but also a metaphor. A sculptural reply to the quiet, ancient pressure of the place I call home.
