If there's an idea that's been brewing but you haven't had the chance to execute it yet, or you've been curious about installation work but haven't had a venue, this is your shot. We're not looking for safe. We want work that pushes you a little past what's comfortable- the piece you'd make if you permitted yourself to try something you haven't fully figured out yet.

 

There's real precedent here: some of the twentieth century's most significant artists made window displays for Bonwit Teller early in their careers, using storefronts as a space to test ideas in public, in full view of people who might never walk into a gallery.

 

Key details:

• Open to: any material, sculpture or installation, 3D work

• Proposals due: September 30, 2026

• Opening reception: February 6, 2027

• Stipend: modest artist stipend anticipated, pending private grant funding

• Status: We've already had inquiries and phone conversations with interested artists, enough that my sense is this is going to happen.

Approximate Window sizes:

• Two windows, 51" W x 76" H x 3' D

• One window, 101" W x 76" H x 3' D

• One side window, 95" W x 76" H x 3' D

 A few questions have come up:

Construction & mounting: We're building actual boxes, premade, with a bottom, sides, and a top. You can hang and mount pieces inside them, including from the top. How much on-site prep time you need is up to you and how you build; if most of the work is done ahead of time and you're just installing into the box, it could take as little as a day.

 

Viewpoints: Visibility is from the street only, not from inside the studio, so you're designing for a single outward-facing viewpoint rather than something seen in the round.

 

Timeline and reception: Once a piece is installed, we'll move the boxes into place in the windows and determine the best way to secure them. For the opening, we're planning some kind of reveal, likely pulling back a curtain, on February 6, 2027. There's a wide sidewalk out front, so we'll have portable heaters for the reveal, plus opening festivities inside the studio itself.
